VIDEO GAME: LittleBigPlanet Vita Review

LittleBigPlanet's best incarnation yet? Reach out and touch a sackboy!

The Vita’s stream of software has slowed a bit over the past couple of months. Good thing, then, that LittleBigPlanet Vita has arrived. Like its predecessor, it’s good for nearly infinite hours of creativity and experimentation for budding game designers.

Essentially, it’s all about the Create mode. All of the level-making features of the PS3 LittleBigPlanet titles are here—unlike the hobbled PSP version of LittleBigPlanet. And the hardware is put to good use. A host of new tools are integrated into the Vita version, all of which make use of the Vita's touch screen, rear touch pad, and even gyroscope. Interestingly, the touch controls pair well with the original analog controls, and you’ll use them in combination with one another. Thankfully, all of the game’s tools—both old and new—are explained in a series of tutorials by the series’ esteemed narrator, Stephen Fry.

There are some technical issues: As on PS3, things can tend to chug when there are too many objects on the screen, which can send you scurrying to find and eliminate the ones causing the trouble. There are some load-time issues, and the campaign is only a few hours long. But this is still easily one of the best Vita games to date and contains endless hours of creative fun on the go.

Hint: One of the biggest additions to LBP Vita is the Memorizer function, which for the first time in the series, allows saving in user-created levels. Yay!
