Future spooky-looking skeleton and SJ Editor Urian Brown takes a look at this week's issue.
Cover
art by Kohei Horikoshi
Yeah! Oohhhh! AAHHH! Those are the sound effects and the feeling I get when I see a cover this cool! As an old-school American comic book fan (60's–80's), Kohei Horikoshi's take on the American comic book style is really fun to see. It's still obviously manga, but the colors and oversized sound effects give a more Western feel. And the sound effects are in English too on the Japanese Weekly Shonen Jump cover! I imagine little Japanese kids at home sounding them out and looking amused.
My Hero Academia
by Kohei Horikoshi
Well if that cover didn't get you excited, this chapter surely will! And if you thought the poll in the chapter was just for Japanese, we're doing our own U.S. version! You can take the character popularity poll right here! And as for the chapter, it's a doozy! Last week, all heck broke loose when the Hero Killer and his allies attacked the city. Luckily, Deku arrived on the scene just in the nick of time to save Ida. But has he trained enough to take on a villain as powerful and bloodthirsty as the Hero Killer? We'll see!
Best Blue
by Masahiro Hirakata
It's the final chapter of the Best Blue JUMP START! It's the first swimming manga I've ever read and it's been a lot of fun. I learned a little about competitive swimming and really enjoyed the characters. Especially the grumpy coach! I'll be rooting Aono on from the bleachers (figuratively), as I'm sure many of you will.
Nisekoi
by Naoshi Komi
Holy smokes, this has been a crazy mini-arc! Usually, Raku's pretty confused by his indecision concerning the numerous girls who like him, but he rarely has to actually decide anything. And now that Yui's given him an ultimatum, he's had to wrestle with himself a bit. It'll be interesting to see if any other girls force his hand!
Bleach
by Tite Kubo
We've seen some pretty strange bad guys in Bleach, but this one may be the weirdest of them all! In fact, I can't even tell 100% what he's supposed to be! All we know so far is, he's incredibly strong. He took Kenpachi's arm off really fast! Can Mayumi, the resident mad scientist, come up with a plan to beat this ultra-powerful oddity?
World Trigger
Daisuke Ashihara
Osamu continues his training with Tachikawa Squad! He's got to beat Yuiga at least 100 times before he can learn Composite Shots. But that's not going to be easy! And it won't be quick! Meanwhile, someone has a birthday! Someone really cute with a lot of Trion!
Toriko
by Daisuke Ashihara
Komatsu continues his spooky night at the strange little boy's house. The boy has gone missing, but a weird old man wearing a mask seems to know where he might be. And Komatsu learns the strange and terrible dark side of Blue Grill! Plus, get ready to meet some brand new, and slightly eccentric, chefs!
Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma
story by Yuto Tsukuda, art by Shun Saeki, Contributor Yuki Morisaki
Soma is seriously struggling with this challenge. In fact, this has been one of Soma's hardest challenges so far. He's been trying new things to counter the seemingly overwhelming power of the Chinese Food Society, but nothing is sticking. Well, his buns were sticking, to the side of the oven, but that wasn't enough! Is this it? Has he finally met his match?
Black Clover
by Yûki Tabata
The Black Bulls put on their party hats and head to a shindig thrown by the Wizard King! And not just any party, there will be some of the top mages in the kingdom. Lots of biggies! Will the Black Bulls get along with such high and lofty folk? Or will they be like a Black Bull in a china shop?
Twin Star Exorcists
Yoshiaki Sukeno
Rokuro was born with exceptional exorcist powers. But there's just one problem...he doesn't want to be an exorcist! But when a strange girl falls out of the sky, things take an unexpected turn! While at first glance this may seem like just another exorcist manga, but after this chapter, I have no doubt you'll think different. The set up, which we don't fully learn here, sets it apart from other demon hunting manga. And the art is exceptional, especially the creepy demon designs. And it's funny! Pretty much the whole package!
Dragon Ball
by Akira Toriyama
It's the final week for the Dragon Ball JUMP BACK and I will miss reading this legendary manga. From a historical perspective, it's a lot of fun to see the beginnings of what will go on to the the most successful manga the world has ever known. While it might have been eclipsed in sales by a certain pirate manga, its influence on the world of Shonen Jump manga is unmatched. This little boy with a tail changed the face of manga and anime forever.
Extras: Naruto DVD Set 13 feature, Clash of Rebellions Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG feature, Weekly Shonen Jump Yearbook feature, Author's Comments, Nihongo Lesson.
