Firm believer in the power of friendship and SJ Editor Urian Brown gives his take on this week's issue.
It's a new JUMP START! Not to toot our own horn, but I must admit that Weekly Shonen Jump's been pretty amazing as of late. For many years, a new series in the magazine was somewhat rare. But now with JUMP STARTS and the recent additions to the lineup, seems like there's always something new to read. We're making it very difficult to get bored!
Kagamigami
by Toshiaki Iwashiro
One thing cool about being a longtime manga fan is you get to see the evolution of artists. And although Iwashiro Sensei's previous work Psyren had good art, Kagamigami definitely takes it up a notch. And the story's quite intriguing as well. Mako's lifelong dream is to be a detective. Well now she is one, but she can't seem to get any work. All that changes when she meets a strange boy in the park. One with the power to talk to the spirits! Working together, they face a supernaturally powered maniac killer! This looks like the beginning of a most unusual partnership! Because of Psyren, I had a feeling the story would be good, but I didn't expect this to be as funny as it was. This looks like a series to keep an eye on!
Food Wars!: Shokugeki no Soma
story by Yuto Tsukuda, art by Shun Saeki
The Fall Classic cooking competition is over and Soma lost. But he's not taking it too bad. In fact he seems invigorated by it! And now it's time to turn his sights on the newest challenge—Stagiaire Week! The class is headed for some "realness" as they will intern at actual restaurants! It's one thing to cook in the comforts of a school kitchen, but dealing with the challenges of a working restaurant is a whole different scenario!
My Hero Academia
by Kohei Horikoshi
Please welcome, My Hero Academia to the Weekly Shonen Jump lineup! It warms the cockles of my heart to see the Barrage mangaka land a successful series. I love the art and story in Barrage so I was most definitely sad when it ended. But that's the essence of Shonen Jump manga! If you don't succeed, try again! Never give up! Train harder and come back stronger! And judging by this manga, it looks like that's exactly what Horikoshi Sensei did! Not to mention that, he struck upon a genius idea—a whole world where almost everybody has superpowers. The possibilities are endless!
Toriko
by Mitsutoshi Shimabukuro
Zebra, Coco, Sunny and Toriko are giving the Monkey King everything they've got! They're all attacking this unthinkably powerful opponent at the same time in the hopes that it will be enough to take him down for good. It's total chaos! The monkey crowd's gone wild! The ref's blind! Actually, I don't think there is a ref in Monkey Wrestling, he'd probably get obliterated in the first second. Anyway, get ready for action!
World Trigger
by Daisuke Ashihara
The dust has settled from Yuma's stunning victory in the Rank Wars. And now everybody at Border seems to have an opinion on the match and the upcoming ones! Can Yuma and the others repeat the magic?
Nisekoi
by Naoshi Komi
This chapter changes everything! In a series where a lot of wacky things happen, it looks like something serious is threatening to bring everyone to tears! One thing's for sure, going forward they may have to change the whole name of the manga! (They probably wont, don't worry.)
Gakkyu Hotei: School Judgment
story by Nobuaki Enoki, art by Takeshi Obata
Inugami's got the Magical Happy case all figured out! Now it's time to call a surprise witness and shock the entire court! The baby judge may lose even more hair after this case! If you think you've got it all worked out, I bet you don't, because nobody could have seen this ending coming!
Bleach
by Tite Kubo
Urahara's putting the final touches on his plan to save the Soul Society! Meanwhile, Yhwach is playing games with Ichigo's mind! He seems to know just how to manipulate him into doing what he wants. Can Ichigo figure out what his game is? Or will he dance just like Yhwach wants?
Seraph of the End: Vampire Reign
by story by Takaya Kagami, art by Yamato Yamamoto, storyboards by Daisuke Furuya
Finally a chapter dedicated to Yoichi's childhood friend, Mika! We've seen glimpses from time to time, but not much beyond a page or two. This whole chapter is about Mika and will give you a better look into his complex personality. While his loyalties are still kind of murky, it's clear he still has a soft spot for humans. An interesting chapter, to be sure!
