The brawl at Punk Hazard continues! As Luffy faces Caesar Clown (mass-destruction arms-dealer and human-trafficker), the rest of the Straw Hats try to get the kidnapped children to safety. Meanwhile, Smoker and Trafalgar Law interrogate Vice Admiral Vergo, and all the while “Joker” (aka Don Quixote Doflamingo) sends two of his best operatives to deal with the problem! More insanity awaits within One Piece Vol. 70!
Having backed Caesar Clown into a corner, he releases Land of the Dead, a horrifying gas that encases its victims in hardened shells before killing them! Caesar Clown himself combines it with the powers of his Gas-Gas fruit and transforms into a massive, poisonous giant…who bursts into tears of absolute terror seconds later when he sees that Luffy’s got two massive rubber fists with his name on them!
Speaking of fights, meet two new members of Doflamingo’s crew: Baby 5 and Buffalo. Both arrive on a mission to retrieve Cesar Clown from Luffy and Law, so naturally another crazy huge fight ensues. Baby 5 herself may occasionally be made of metal (her Arms-Arms fruit lets her turn her body into any kind of weaponry she fancies), but her antics are pure comedy gold. First thing she does is rant at Doflamingo for axing her fiancé. She’s sworn that he has to die…but only after she finishes the mission he assigned her to complete!
Buffalo’s really cool too, since his Spin-Spin Fruit powers let him fly (or send massive gusts of air) by spinning his propeller-dreds, along with any other limb on his body. Human flying machine and transportation device? Not too shabby! He also lends Baby 5 some help in practicing restraint, when he’s not asking her for even more cash she doesn’t have.
For all the fun that results from Luffy’s crazy impulsiveness and ability to keep on bashing down whatever stands in his way, there’s definitely something to be said for actually using smarts and savvy to maneuver an enemy into position. And Law makes some strategic moves that put really Doflamingo in a bind.
As One Piece hits the Big Seven-Zero, we can only reflect on the qualities that make this one of the most successful manga of all time! Props to Oda-sensei—even after all this, he still keeps the One Piece coming!
