Learn how to describe how something tastes like in Japanese in this week's lesson!
By August 29, 2014

Welcome to the Nihongo Lesson feature. We strive to give you useful manga-based Japanese language tips and maybe even a glimpse into the translation process. This week’s lesson focuses on something that we’ve touched on before. Let’s see how much you’ve learned!

POP QUIZ!!

In a previous lesson months ago, we learned how to say that something tastes good. Do you remember? Major props if you still know how to say UMAI/OISHII. These are very useful words to know so hopefully some of you remembered. Unfortunately, there will be a whap on the hand with a ten-foot ruler to those who forgot... Now let’s check out some more food terms!

MAZUI (まずい)

MAZUI is the word to use when something tastes bad. It can also be translated as “gross.” The first pages of Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma, a manga series all about delicious foods, features the main character saying MAZUI. Who knew mixing squid and peanut butter wouldn’t taste good?! However, if you’re a guest in someone’s home you might not want to offend anyone by using this word to describe the food. Politeness comes first!

AMAI/KARAI (あまい/からい)

AMAI and KARAI mean “sweet” and “spicy.” Japanese foods tend to be less sweet and spicy than what’s found in other parts of the world, but you’ll still have plenty of opportunities to use these food words. Just make sure you use the right one in the right context. People may think you’re crazy if you start calling ice cream KARAI!
