Learning Japanese can drive you Batsu!
Welcome to the Nihongo Lesson feature. We strive to give you useful manga-based Japanese language tips and maybe even a glimpse into the translation process. This week's lesson will once again feature terms from our newest JUMP START series, Takuan & Batsu's Daily Demon Diary. Names are always important in manga, so let's take a look at the meaning behind the names in this series!
BATSU (ばつ)
BATSU can mean a variety of things, but I think the most relevant meaning in the context of this series is "punishment" or "penalty." The story seems to revolve around Batsu punishing demons and even poor Takuan for any misdeeds. It appears that it would be very wise to not get on her bad side.
TAKUAN (たくあん)
TAKUAN are "pickled daikon radishes." TAKUAN are seen as a very basic pickled vegetable and come on the side of many traditional Japanese meals. They are even thought to serve as a digestive aid. This common everyday side dish is the perfect nickname for a main character who just wants to enjoy a normal, boring life.
JIGOKU (じごく)
JIGOKU means "hell," and you see this word a lot in Takuan and Batsu. I wonder what kind of JIGOKU Batsu will unleash on Takuan in the next chapter?
