The Nura clan is a syndicate of powerful yokai (supernatural creatures that thrive on human fear) led by the mischievous Nurarihyon. His grandson, young Rikuo Nura, is the next to become the leader of this clan but he has one problem—he’s only one-quarter yokai! Though Rikuo is an ordinary teenager by day, when night envelops the world in darkness, his yokai blood awakens! Will he rise to become a great leader or will his human tendencies lead the clan to their downfall?

Volume 8 of Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan dives into Nurarihyon's past. In the early 1600s, Nurarihyon falls in love with the beautiful Princess Yo and asks her to marry him. Before she could give him an answer, she is kidnapped by a malicious yokai known as Hagoromo-Gitsune who desires the princess’s liver and her healing powers. Nurarihyon rushes to save her with the aid of his Night Parade of Hundred Demons.

The excitement packed into this volume make it a must see for Shonen Jump fans! Shiibashi Sensei dives right into the action after the first few pages. The epic fight scenes between the Nura clan and Hagoromo-Gitsune’s army were so thrilling! Each side refused to back down. Hargoromo-Gitsune kept coming up with new and dirty tactics in this astounding battle. It was so exciting, I was disappointed when it was over because I wanted more yokai action!

Nura also has very uniquely designed characters inspired by Japanese folklore. Each Yokai is beautifully drawn; it was fun looking at all the different types of yokai. My personal favorite in this series is Kappa and the neckless Kubinshi. Sadly, neither of them was seen much in this volume, but I did enjoy looking at the many other wacky and unique yokai.

As a fan of this series, I’m curious to see what awaits Rikuo in the future. Along with a revelation from his grandfather's past, this volume sets up a new phase for Rikuo as he prepares himself to stop Hargoromo-Gitsune’s sinister plans. However, he is currently not strong enough to face her. What can Rikuo do to defeat her and protect his friends?
