Feared by the humans they protect, Claymores are silver-eyed witches that hunt and kill monsters known as Yoma. Though their lives are lonely, Clare, the main Claymore protagonist, accepts it. Her only reason to exist was to destroy the awakened monster, Priscilla, at least that’s what she thought until she met another lonely soul named Raki...

After a Yoma disguised as a human kills Raki’s whole family, the village casts out Raki. With nowhere else to go, he follows Clare believing she isn’t the silver-eyed monster that everyone thinks. Clare sees a bit of herself in Raki since she too was an orphan after her family was killed, so she decides to let him accompany her as a cook. As they travel together, they inspire each other to keep living, even when all hope seems lost. Clare saves Raki’s life, and Raki in turn helps Clare and even prevents her from losing her humanity and fully awakening.

Clare’s relationship with Raki is similar to her relationship with the late Claymore Teresa. Teresa took Clare in after she kills a Yoma that was holding her hostage. After they start traveling together, Teresa finds that she possesses emotions that she never experienced before. Both Clare and Teresa see each other’s pain and ease each other’s loneliness. Tragically their bond is severed when Priscilla kills Teresa. After Teresa’s death, Clare becomes a Claymore, seeking vengeance for the death of her friend.

Clare and Raki’s relationship becomes the key to their survival. However, in the battle with Ophelia, the two have to separate. At first, Raki is reluctant to leave Clare’s side, but she convinces him to go, promising to not die until they see each other again. With this promise in mind, she takes on Ophelia and immediately searches for Raki afterward. Though Clare faces some extremely powerful foes, she still continues searching, knowing that Raki is waiting for her.
