God Eater Resurrection

The PSP game reborn! Or...resurrected to be exact.

In the future, monstrous beings of unknown origin called Aragami roam the Earth. Fierce and tough, they cannot be killed by ordinary weapons. The Aragami easily overtake the planet and humankind almost goes extinct—until the Fenrir Organization decides to create weapons using the oracle cells from the Aragami themselves called God Arcs. With these God Arcs, the human soldiers who wield them have a fighting chance against the Aragami and are thus called “God Eaters." In God Eater Resurrection, you are a newly enlisted God Eater with a special New-Type God Arc fighting for the Far East district of Fenrir.

God Eater Resurrection is an enhanced re-release of the PSP game God Eater Burst, which itself was an updated re-release of God Eater. Released for the PS4 and the Vita, God Eater Resurrection is a mission-based action game with RPG elements, similar to Capcom's Monster Hunter series. There's a small hub, you accept missions, you hunt monsters within the allotted time, and return victorious with spoils from said monsters that can be used to craft better weapons and new items. As a God Eater, it is your job to kill the Aragami as they arrive in the settlement. Your God Arc is highly customizable and can be fashioned into a blade, a lance, a poleaxe, and can be switched to long-range gun mode and even a shield for defense. Your character can be customized too, although the choices are pretty limited.

Variety is the name of the game in God Eater Resurrection. As stated before, your weapon can be fashioned into different modes, but that isn't just limited to your melee weapon. Your bullets can be customized too, like freeze and electric bullets if you're looking to exploit weaknesses in certain Aragami. There's also a variety of traps that can be set, like lures and snares, and repellent can be used if you're looking to be more covert when hunting Aragami. Collecting resources is also important, and they can be collected by picking stuff up from the ground or by slaying Aragami and using your God Arc to devour the Aragami's corpse. Resources are used to create new items and upgrade your God Arc. There's never a “right” or “wrong” way to play, as your weapon can be customized every which way. However, the execution will end up the same.

Missions are mostly “go out and kill some Aragami and try not to get killed." Like with Monster Hunter, it's fun trying out new weapon builds and finding new Aragami to slay but it gets tedious seeing the same monsters again and again. It gets really tedious if you're trying to farm specific resources. Multiplayer missions break up some of the monotony, if only to see how your teammates play compared to your AI-controlled teammates in the single player game. The graphics are nice and clean, although they are definitely not new-gen, and the music is pretty good. I'm not a fan of the voice work but the radio effect from the PS4 controller from your teammates is pretty nifty.

God Eater Resurrection is a fine game if you're looking for that monster hunting itch on your PS4 or Vita, but if you're just a fairweather gamer that isn't into playing for the long haul, then your enjoyment will be spent after a few hours. Unlike Monster Hunter, it's not too grindy or slow, but it's actually a pretty fast game, which is a plus. Get the Vita version if you're looking to eat gods anywhere, anytime.

Hint: Want more God Eater? You're in luck, God Eater 2 just came out!
