Another entry in what has become the premiere Dragon Ball video game series!
If you're reading this review, then I trust that you have read and/or watched Dragon Ball. If you have, then I don't need to explain anything about the history and impact that Dragon Ball has made during the last 30 years. If you haven't, then what's your damage? Check it out! It's a classic! Heck, Dragon Ball Super, the latest entry to the long-running series, can be read on this very website for FREE!
Anyway, Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 has recently dropped and although it feels more like an expansion than a true sequel, it'll still provide hours of entertainment for fans. Like with the original Xenoverse, you'll be able to create your own character. You can choose between the human, Saiyan, Namekian, Majin or Freeza race, and each faction has their own stat bonuses. Moreover, if you have a save file from the original Xenoverse, you can import your original character's stats and gear to your new character. And what's also cool is that you'll see a heroic statue of your original character on the city square for everyone to marvel at, giving Xenoverse 2 a sense of continuity.
Speaking of continuity, the setting for Xenoverse 2 takes place quite some time after the original Xenoverse. Players spend their free time in Conton City, the new hub of Xenoverse 2, which is about seven times larger than Xenoverse's Toki Toki City. Rookie Time Patrollers can take on missions to earn permissions to do more in Conton City, in addition to experience points, items, Zeni (money) and TP medals (special currency). While you can't fly around the city in the beginning, you do get a small vehicle to move around since it's a much larger hub. You'll need it since you'll pretty much be an errand boy (or girl) for the Elder Kaioshin or the Kaioshin of Time or whoever needs your assistance. You can even meet classic Dragon Ball characters and ask them to take you on as their student and learn their signature moves. And as you play, you'll even meet new characters from Dragon Ball Super !
The core gameplay in Xenoverse 2 is essentially unchanged. Your job as a Time Patroller is to right the wrongs of history, with history being the entire Dragon Ball canon. You'll be punching, kicking, flying, teleporting and even Kamehameha-ing your way to victory as you relive famous battles from the series and eventually take on new scenarios. These scenarios can be played online and offline, with rewards for each type. You can even tackle scenarios with friends! You can also just fight online warriors like a standard fighting match. The netcode was a bit spotty during launch but after an update patch, it was fairly easy to play online matches and play these online quests, provided you have a good connection. The loading times are a bit on the long side, though.
Whether you had fun with the original Xenoverse and wanted more or you just want to experience Dragon Ball-style combat, you'll have a good time with Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2. Provided that you have a solid internet connection and a lot of spare time on your hands to level your fighter to the point where they can face off with gods.
Hint: If you're fingers get tired, but you still want more Dragon Ball, don't forget you can read Dragon Ball Super on this site! For free! FREE!
